Amherst College built four new residence halls, housing 300 sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Designed by Kyu Sung Woo, each dormitory includes single and double occupancy rooms, suites, studies, common rooms, kitchens, and meeting and seminar rooms. In addition to these traditional spaces, the complex also includes a demonstration kitchen suitable for cooking classes, a large event space, a bicycle shop, and a yoga, exercise and meditation space. The common outdoor space shared by the buildings includes sitting areas, barbecue grills, and recreational space suitable for team sports.
Acentech provided acoustics and audiovisual consulting services for the entire dormitory complex. Our audiovisual consultants designed systems for the common areas of the building: the 2,000 SF event space, as well as multiple meeting rooms, music practice rooms, and private study rooms. These systems include presentation, collaboration, speech reinforcement, audio playback, AV recording and archiving, ADA-compliant assistive listening, and digital signage and electronic wayfinding.
Acentech’s acoustics consultants focused on sound isolation between the dorm rooms and the other spaces within the building, In addition, we provided guidance on room finishes for public areas, including the event space, social and study spaces, lounges, practice rooms, meeting rooms, and lobbies to provide adequate noise control and to reduce noise buildup from activity. Finally, we recommended criteria and guidelines for control of noise and vibration from mechanical systems including noise into spaces within the building and noise transfer to the surrounding campus neighborhood and community. Special attention was paid to achieving quiet background sound levels in the event space.
