Veterans Affairs Worcester Outpatient Clinic

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ nationwide goal to deliver accessible, comprehensive healthcare to veterans prompted the design and development of this new, 117,000 sf outpatient care facility on the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School campus in Worcester, MA. The building is shared by both the VA and UMass Medical for outpatient and administrative programs.

SmithGroup’s welcoming, calm interiors and accessible wayfinding were designed with veterans’ needs in mind, with clinical spaces organized around the VA’s Patient-Aligned Care Teams (PACT) model. The facility includes radiology, cardiology, mental health, rehabilitation, audiology, podiatry, over 80 exam rooms, and pharmacy and lab services.

Acentech’s acoustics experts provided sound isolation and noise/ vibration control strategies for the base building’s mechanical systems, which included duct attenuation and air flow configuration recommendations. We also designed sound and vibration isolation and room acoustics strategies for the interior fit-out of the Veterans Affairs spaces to ensure patient privacy.

This new, award-winning facility’s sustainable design features include common spaces with large windows that provide ample natural light, an active chilled beam system with decoupled ventilation, high efficiency HVAC equipment, and LED lighting. With its welcoming façade and engaging interiors, the VA Worcester Outpatient Clinic is positioned to honor and serve U.S. military veterans and their caregivers for decades to come.
