New England College, a small, private institution known for its innovative academic programs and commitment to the arts, hired architect Dewing Schmid Kearns in 2015 to design a new performing arts center for its theater arts program.

Acentech provided acoustics, audiovisual and telecommunications consulting services for the new Rosamond Page Putnam Center for the Performing Arts, in collaboration with DSK and theatre consultant Martin Vinik.

At the center of the new Putnam Center is a wonderfully intimate 350-seat theater. The thrust stage brings the action to the audience, and the tiered seating layout provides great views. Curved overhead reflectors and side wall shaping help to distribute sound naturally to the audience, and a state-of-the-art audiovisual system provides clear and vivid amplified sound and video, as well as ADA-compliant assistive listening. Silent operation of building mechanical systems ensures audience comfort without upstaging the artists.

Production communications systems connect the stage technical staff stage in the control room with the green room, dressing rooms, box office, and front of house staff. Digital signage and electronic wayfinding lead the public through the lobby and amenity spaces.

The new Putnam Center is an intimate, inviting, and captivating space for student performances, music, lectures and even presidential town halls. Its flexible and accessible technology supports the pedagogical and performance needs of the building— an achievement of creative teamwork.
