AIA25 Guided Sound Walk through Boston’s Fort Point and Seaport Neighborhoods

AIA25-soundwalk

Acentech Principal Robert Connick will be giving several guided Sound Walks during the AIA25 convention in Boston next month!

Sound is a critical dimension of the urban environment. It has the power to define and reinforce the positive identity of a location. It can also obscure that identity as noise. In extreme cases, noise pollution has negative health effects: sleep disruption, and cardiovascular and metabolic effects. Understanding the sound environment as a dimension of urban planning and design can help to create locations with a sense of place, while promoting health and well-being.

Bob’s guided Sound Walk is inspired Michael Southworth’s 1969 paper, “The Sonic Environment of Cities,” a landmark exploratory study often credited with coining the term “soundscape.” Experience distinct historic and new locations and the sounds that enhance or obscure their identities.

The gentle city walk begins and ends at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and includes: the Fort Point historic warehouse and manufacturing district, the Fort Point Channel waterway, the Rose Kennedy Greenway (created by the Big Dig project), and the newly developed Fan Pier Park and Seaport District. The route is approximately 2.2 miles long and is generally flat.
