“During my graduate school education in architecture, I was drawn to the study of acoustics because it combined my interests in music and building technologies. Being a consultant has given me the chance to work with people on solving problems, support the design of buildings, and be part of a team that engages many disciplines.”

Carl Rosenberg, a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), began his architectural acoustics career in 1970 at the acoustics pioneer firm of Bolt Beranek and Newman. He then co-founded Acentech in 1988. During his tenure with Acentech, Carl’s consulting projects have encompassed a wide variety of building types including schools, churches, auditoriums, residences, and office buildings, with a special interest in good hearing conditions for performance spaces and noise control in the workplace. His recent work has included a focus on soundproofing of residential, institutional, and commercial buildings impacted by environmental noise and speech privacy issues for offices. This work covers criteria development, feasibility studies, and recommendations and detailing of actual constructions.

Always listening and learning

“As I attend concerts and support a variety of musical endeavors, I listen to the spaces where the performances occur, and I learn from talking with performers about how we can best serve our design partners. The enjoyment I receive from attending a musical performance is a combination of the skills of the performers, the talents of the composer, the acoustics of a space, the visual delight of the venue, and the social engagement that adds another dimension to the experience.”
