Changing Needs – Mullins Center Upgrade Presents Challenges

In 1993, the Mullins Center, named for Massachusetts State Representative William D. Mullins, opened on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus, replacing a 1930s-era basketball gymnasium. At the time, the 10,500- seat arena sported dual sound systems, designed by the multidisciplinary AV, IT and acoustical consulting and design firm Acentech, to cover the variety of events in the space. Nearly 20 years later, Acentech (, more than 60 years old and with offices in Boston MA, Philadelphia PA and Los Angeles CA, was called again to help upgrade the audio systems in the space with a series of QSC line arrays, Q-Sys processing, a Yamaha digital console and Crestron control.
