Aircraft Noise Exposure Along South Boston’s Waterfront Development

Major development is underway along the South Boston waterfront. During the last few decades, many waterfront industries have relocated or closed, allowing developers to take advantage of the newly reclaimed land to create commercial, residential and retail spaces. Along with existing industrial activity, the waterfront area has one other significant drawback: it is under the flight path of a departure runway from Logan International Airport. Aircraft departing over this area present a significant acoustical challenge to the extensive development that is occurring. This paper summarizes the factors related to the impact of aircraft noise in light of the FAA’s suggested land use compatibility and presents three studies of projects in the area.
