Acentech is collaborating with the Hensel Phelps/Corgan design-build team to provide acoustics consulting services for the renovation and reconstruction of Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The new terminal is being designed to reflect the city’s culture and sense of place, elevate the passenger and employee experience, meet LEED Gold criteria with improved energy efficiency, and prepare LAX for the influx of travelers during the 2028 Olympic Games.
Utilizing a design-build delivery method, the project is advancing on a fast-tracked, compressed schedule. The existing concourse will be demolished and reconstructed off-site, while the headhouse will be taken down to its structural frame and rebuilt in place. To support this accelerated timeline, Acentech has assembled two dedicated teams—one focused on the concourse and the other on the headhouse—working closely with Hensel Phelps to address architectural acoustics and building systems noise and vibration control throughout the terminal. A key area of emphasis is ensuring speech intelligibility in high-traffic public areas.
We are also advising the design team on finish selections that meet both the project’s aesthetic goals and acoustical performance targets, and recommending sound-isolating construction for club lounges and staff offices to ensure comfort and privacy in non-public areas.
When complete, the reimagined Terminal 5—alongside other ongoing improvements—will enhance the LAX experience and further establish Los Angeles as a world-class travel destination.
