Boston University transformed a vacant former Hillel House building into the expanded Alan and Sherry Leventhal Admissions Reception Center.

The new Center will serve as a first impression of Boston University for prospective students and parents. Given the important role this newly renovated and expanded building will play in student enrollment, great care and consideration was taken in forming the project team. Technology was an important function of the design, and Acentech was tapped by architectural firm Goody Clancy to design the audiovisual systems.

Acentech’s designs included a 3×3 LCD video wall in the entry way, a room of interactive flat screen display stations, background music and paging throughout the building, systems for multiple offices and conference rooms, and an electronic hours of operation display in the front window.

The centerpiece of Acentech’s design was a massive rear projection screen in the 150-seat auditorium. The 10 ft x 18 ft floor-to-ceiling screen is the focal point of the space, which will be used for multimedia presentations at the start of a prospective student’s visit to the campus. This room was the biggest challenge on the project: the fixed sized of the room meant that several options had to be considered in order to meet the technical requirements, seating capacity, and budget set by the University. Acentech partnered closely with Goody Clancy to maximize the impact of the screen, while still meeting the mandated seating limits.

Acentech also provided acoustics consulting on the project, advising on room shaping and finishes.
