Acentech provided acoustics and vibration consulting services for the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine, an 11-story, 675,000 SF translational research and clinical facility on the Longwood campus of Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

The building houses eight floors of research laboratories, two floors of medical clinics, a vivarium, a conference and teaching center, and a state-of-the-art imaging facility, as well as a 400-car parking garage.

Acentech’s design addressed architectural acoustics, building mechanical system noise and vibration control, footfall-induced vibration control, and control of noise and vibration due to the Co-Generation plant in the basement of the building. The CoGen plant was a potential source of significant noise and vibration that could adversely impact sensitive equipment throughout the building. The project team mitigated the vibrations and noise emanating from the CoGen machines by mounting the plant on a concrete pad with 10-in.-thick vibration isolation pads installed between the pad and the floor.

Another area of concern for this project was the footfall-induced vibration in the vivarium, laboratories, and imaging suite. Acentech assessed the vibration, and made recommendations in order to achieve acceptable vibration levels for these sensitive spaces.

This award-winning project is designed for LEED Gold certification.
