In 1996, Boston City Hospital and University Hospital merged to form Boston Medical Center (BMC).

The merger created two separate hospital campuses separated by a single city block, each with their own inpatient and outpatient services causing costly and inefficient hospital operations. The Clinical Campus Redesign Project (CCR) was the final piece of the merger, with the aim of creating a single unified campus that would enhance patient experience by consolidating services and providing innovative healthcare with new state-of-the-art accommodations and surgical suites.

Acentech provided acoustics consulting services for the largest of the CCR projects, the Menino Addition and Renovation project. The project included the demolition of an existing infill building, a new 120,000 SF addition, 257,000 SF of renovations to the Menino Pavilion, and construction of a pedestrian bridge with elevator towers at each end.

BMC accommodates 140,000 patients in its consolidated Emergency Department, the busiest in New England. A transportation bridge has been constructed to connect the Emergency Department to the helipad.

Acentech provided room acoustics, sound isolation, mechanical system noise and vibration control, structural dynamics vibration consulting services for a variety of spaces: patient rooms, operating rooms, MRIs, central processing department, staff lounges, offices, ultrasound rooms, radiology reading rooms, consult rooms, exam rooms, waiting rooms, CT rooms, trauma rooms, on-call rooms, PACU, pre-op areas, observation rooms, chapel, and conference rooms.

This project utilized an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). BMC is the first academic medical center in Massachusetts to use IPD and the largest to employ IPD in New England.
