Acentech Announces New Staff, Promotions in Cambridge Headquarters

Acentech Inc., a nationally recognized multi-disciplinary acoustics, audiovisual systems design, and vibration consulting firm, is proud to announce new staff and promotions in its Cambridge headquarters:

New Staff
Scott Jordan joins Acentech as a Consultant I in the Audiovisual Systems Design group, led by Richard Closs, CTS-D. Consulting on sound and audiovisual systems design, Scott’s strengths include system design, computer modeling, system commissioning, and customer support. Prior to joining Acentech, Scott worked as an application support group specialist for Eastern Acoustic Works, and as a professional audio engineer for several New England-based production companies. He has designed systems in challenging acoustical and architectural spaces, and overseen the tuning and commissioning of several sound systems, small to large. At Acentech, Scott is involved with a wide range of projects, assisting other members of the Systems Design group, as well as working in EASE acoustics software to create models for colleagues Acentech’s Architectural Acoustics and Noise and Vibration groups. Scott received a Bachelor of Art in Music from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.

Promotions in the R.H. Lyon Division of the Noise and Vibration Group

Reporting to Jeffrey Zapfe, Director of Acentech’s Noise and Vibration group, Acentech is proud to promote Dr. Gladys Unger, product noise reduction and sound quality consultant in Acentech’s R.H. Lyon Division of the Noise and Vibration group, to the position of Senior Consultant I.

Dr. Gladys Unger has over 10 years of experience in the field of acoustics and vibration. Much of that effort has involved product noise analysis, sound quality studies, and machinery diagnostics. Her work involves testing and measurement of acoustical signals, vibration, pressure fluctuations, and those quantities related to fluctuating forces within the machinery under study. Gladys is responsible for creating prototypes and assembling diagnostic systems. She is also responsible for the “human side” of
jury studies: designing the jury forms, convening the jury, administering the testing, and reducing the data. Gladys is a program committee member of the Greater Boston Chapter of the Acoustical Society of America and an associate member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering. She received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Gettysburg College, and a Master of Science and Ph.D., both in Physics, from the University of Pittsburgh.

Promotions in the Architectural Acoustics and Mechanical Systems Group

Reporting to Jeffrey Fullerton, Director of Acentech’s Architectural Acoustics and Mechanical Systems group, Acentech is proud to promote to Consultant II, Ioana Pieleanu and Jonah Sacks, who have used their exceptional modeling skills, musical experience, and personal acoustical insights to greatly enhance the services for their clients; to Senior Consultant I, Ben Markham, who having returned from educational sabbatical, continues to provide excellent leadership of his projects and greater insight on acoustical modeling as a result of his recent studies for a Master of Science degree; and to Senior Consultant II, Thomas McGraw, for his extensive experience, attention to detail and dedicated client work.

Ben Markham is an acoustician involved in a variety of projects concerned with performance spaces and other commercial, residential, and industrial facilities. His responsibilities include architectural acoustics and mechanical systems noise control. He has an avid interest in acoustical models and auralizations (computer simulations of acoustic environments). Ben has consulted on projects related to room acoustics, sound isolation, auditorium and concert hall acoustics, music rehearsal spaces, acoustics of worship spaces, classroom and lecture hall acoustics, environmental noise control, condominium sound isolation, noise control for industrial machinery, zoning regulations review, and assessment of industrial plant noise impact on surrounding communities.

He is a member of the Acoustical Society of America and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. Ben received the Robert B. Newman Medal for Architectural Acoustics in 2002, and has many published papers and original research to his credit. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as a Certificate of Proficiency in Architecture and Engineering, from Princeton University, and a Master of Science in Architectural Acoustics from Rensselaer Polytechnic

Thomas McGraw consults on a diverse range of building types, including auditoria, media production and projection facilities, college and university facilities, elementary and secondary schools, houses of worship, civic centers, medical facilities, headquarters and office buildings, and residential (both single-family and multi-family). He has experience in all phases of these projects: feasibility studies, programming, preliminary layouts, specifications and detailing of final constructions, and observation of construction. His responsibilities include room acoustics, sound isolation, MEP noise and vibration control, and environmental measurement and mitigation. In addition to his acoustical experience, he also has formal training in both architecture and fine art, and prides himself in striving for the appropriate acoustical design in an architecturally sensitive manner. Thomas is a member of the Acoustical Society of America, an associate member of the American Institute of Architects, and the founding and current chair of the Performing Arts Design Committee of the Boston Society of Architects. He received a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering (with a concentration in Architectural Acoustics) from the University of Kansas, and a Master of Science in Architecture from the University of Oregon.

Ioana Pieleanu’s acoustics expertise encompasses room acoustics, sound isolation and mechanical systems noise and vibration control. She consults on a variety of projects such as performing arts centers and music schools, auditoria, recording studios/critical listening spaces, university buildings as well as other types of institutional, residential or commercial facilities. Her consulting routine uses classical acoustics concepts and methods combined with the latest computer modeling technology or “auralization.” In addition, Ioana is an accomplished musician, with over 20 years of piano performance and music studies. She is a member of the Acoustical Society of America and an associate member of the Institute of Acoustics in the U.K. Ioana studied Music Theory and Education at the Universitatea de Muzica in Bucharest. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Production and Sound Engineering from Berklee College of Music, and a Master of Science in Building Sciences – Architectural Acoustics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Jonah Sacks consults on architectural acoustics and mechanical systems noise control projects. His recent architectural acoustics projects include performance acoustics in churches, auditoria, and outdoor performance spaces, as well as sound isolation and room acoustics in office and residential buildings. Jonah often creates computer models and auralizations with CATT-Acoustic and other software tools. He also has significant experience in environmental noise projects, including community noise evaluation and prediction for highways and industrial sites, often using Cadna/A computer noise modeling software. Jonah is a lifelong musician who has performed in many contexts as a cellist, guitarist, and bassist. He has also presented numerous papers at annual meetings of the Acoustical Society of America. He received a Bachelor of Science from Harvard University and a Master of Science in Architectural Acoustics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
