Sophia Gordon Residence Hall

Tufts University
Medford, MA

William Rawn Associates designed a new environmentally sustainable residence hall for the Tufts University campus. The “greenest” building on the Tufts campus houses 124 students in apartment-style residences. The building also provides a connection to the community by housing a 150-seat space that can function as an informal theater or meeting room.

The space is outfitted with theatrical lighting, a “sprung” dance floor, and flexible seating to accommodate performances, lectures, or group gatherings. With all of the environmental and energy efficient features, including solar panels on the roof, the university is pursuing LEED certification with the United States Green Building Council for the building to officially mark its “green” status.

Acentech gave guidance and recommendations for architectural acoustics and mechanical system noise control. These services included sound isolation between adjacent residences and mechanical noise control of the systems serving the residences. We also assisted with the design of the Multipurpose Room to provide exceptional acoustics for the variety of planned functions, sound isolation of the space from the residences above, and low background noise from the mechanical systems that serve the space.
