East Campus Athletic Village

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Troy NY

Unveiled in October 2009 and designed by Sasaki Associates, the new $92 million athletic village at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the most extensive athletic construction project in the school’s history. Working alongside the architect and the school, Acentech designed the acoustics, audiovisual systems, and information technology systems infrastructure for the facility.

Acentech’s audiovisual technology design included sound reinforcement systems in the competition gymnasium, the practice gymnasium, and the 5,200-seat outdoor football stadium. We paid special attention to the outdoor sound system to make sure sound energy was focused on the bleacher audience area while minimal sound traveled to neighboring residences. Additionally, Acentech integrated flat-panel displays, video projectors and loudspeakers in the various teaching, presentation and gathering spaces throughout the athletic village.

To complement our audiovisual design, Acentech provided acoustical recommendations for reverberation control of the two gymnasiums, the entrance lobby, and broadcast booths. We helped Sasaki incorporate recommended acoustical materials into their visually striking design. We improved speech intelligibility for public address announcements in the two gymnasia to facilitate clear communication during competitions and practices. Our recommendations also ensured a clear, strong sound and a comfortable environment within the lobby and broadcast booths.

Additionally, Acentech provided recommendations for sound isolation and mechanical systems noise and vibration control to ensure appropriate low levels of air conditioning-related noise between the two gyms and other key spaces.
