Acoustical Architecture

This 661,000-square-foot mixed-use project includes the city's new convention center complex. Opened in 2008, the state-of-the-art convention center is comprised of more than 500,000 total square feet of space. It features twenty individual meeting rooms; an exhibit hall that offers 150,000 square feet that is divisible into 3 rooms; an elegant reception area with commanding views of the city; and a 32,000 - square foot ballroom that is divisible into 3 rooms.

The Convention Center Program outlined acoustical goals for the reverberation time, sound isolation and background noise. We assisted the design team to define the necessary coverage of acoustical finishes in the exhibit halls, ballrooms, and meeting rooms. We reviewed the acoustical performance and planned coverage of the finishes that the designers choose to integrate in these spaces. We also focused on sound isolation between acoustically sensitive adjacencies to provide sufficient privacy for the variety of activities within the facility. Most importantly, we recommended noise and vibration control for the impressively large mechanical systems, so that suitably low background noise levels could be achieved - in turn promoting good speech intelligibility and listening conditions for the occupants. We also made recommendations for noise control of exterior equipment to ensure that the facility would be a quiet neighbor in the community.
