Sound Study

Chastain Park Amphitheatre
Atlanta, GA

Acentech performed a detailed acoustical noise study and community sound level assessment of this outdoor amphitheater for the City of Atlanta. Since 1944, the amphitheater hosted a series of summer concerts in the midst of a sensitive residential community. We monitored over a dozen concerts, acquiring data at the venue, in the neighborhood, and inside residences. In addition, Acentech attended meetings of all the stakeholders (the City of Atlanta, residents, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, concert promoters) to discern their goals and concerns.

The ultimate goal was to develop active noise control measures to address the community’s concerns, while providing acoustical mechanisms and/or treatments that would enable these profitable concerts to occur with minimal local impact. The mitigation measures included recommendations for the sound delivery system, amphitheater acoustics, and permanent sound level limits, to address noise concerns and assure continuation of concerts at this historic venue.
