Science, Health Care & ResearchOur consulting covers an array of project types — from nanotechnology labs, college and university research buildings, and corporate labs, to special environments that may contain ultra-sensitive equipment. We also design AV and IT systems to serve communication needs. Although it is not necessary to achieve especially low noise levels in laboratories, with the extensive and substantial mechanical services that are typically required, we pay attention to noise and vibration control so that even modest noise goals can be achieved. Typically, exotic vibration isolation systems are not required, but well conceived, specified and installed isolation systems are essential. Laboratories that house numerous pieces of vibration sensitive equipment may require special structural dynamics investigations to be sure that the site has an adequately low vibration level and to limit the vibration induced by the footfalls of people walking in the facility. Special consideration to space planning can significantly help minimize the impact that such considerations have on the structural design of the building. Our consultants know that when there are only a few pieces of vibration sensitive equipment, it is usually more economical to individually isolate the equipment if that is acceptable for the equipment of concern. For teaching and research buildings, we make recommendations to provide sound isolation between adjacent rooms so the noise in one room does not disturb activities next door.
